Advice on Lake Erie Camping

Thinking about taking family summer vacation at Lake Erie area again this summer. Looking for ideas on a campground to stay at that has a pool, and or close to a nice beach. Also, would like to stay in an area with lots to do for kids. Last year we stayed at the Sandusky KOA, and it wasn't too nice!
Thanks a lot!

Geneva on the Lake area of Lake Erie is nice, with plenty to do. You can swim in Lake Erie with no worries- the west end of the lake had problems last summer.

If you decide on the Lake Michigan trip, head to the Sleeping Bear Dunes area. There's swimming there, you can rent canoes or inner tubes, golf, etc.

Also, look into Door County in Wisconsin.

Have not tried Michigan yet because I have heard its too cold to swim in the lake up there even during the summer months. Any truth to that?

Last year was unusally cold so not the best example. But we have swam in both Michigan and Huron every year for as long as I can remember. Maybe we're great lake snobs, but the kids and I won't swim in Lake Erie. Not when we've been to lake Michigan and lake Huron. They are cleaner by far and you won't believe the miles of pure white sand on Lake Michigan. Better than the ocean imo.

  • check out Maumee Bay State Park- nice beach, bike trails, etc. we have been there 2 times and really enjoyed it. Toledo Zoo is close- we went there once.
