Albany - Troy New York Area

I'm in the early planning of a trip for next fall. We are thinking of going to Niagara Falls and then on to Boston. I was thinking of stopping around the Albany Troy or Glens Fall area to site see for a couple of days and was wondering where to stay what to do. Any help would be appreciated.
  • Do NOT go into Troy under ANY circumstance. When we visited RPI on a college tour they could not warn us enough to stay out of there. Very dangerous place. Friends of ours just did a tour of RPI and were told the same thing.

OMG the Fountain is still there!? I used to live right around the corner from there and that was THE best place for pizza. I moved away in 1982 maybe it's time to go back for a visit.

  • New York is opening a new state park, Schodack Island State Park, this spring just south of Albany. It's on the east bank of the Hudson River very close to the NY Thruway Berkshire Extension to MA.

  • #3 for Arrowhead Marina. Actually the Albany/Troy area is directly on your route to Boston, and the campground is an easy on and off the NY Thruway. We live about 45 miles west of Boston and we use that campground as we travel to western NY. I concur that the Lake George area is great and has a lot of tourist activity, and some great campgrounds. But, to go up there and then head to Boston will add around 100 miles to your trip.
There are things to do in the Albany area. http://www.albany.org/things-to-do/attractions/

Whatever you choose, you will enjoy either or both areas. Travel safe.
  • If you need info on Niagara Falls and or Western New York just let me know. I've lived here most of my life. Lots of interesting places and history.
  • Glens Falls is not particularly on your way to Boston.

In my humble opinion, the Albany/Troy area only offers rather limited sightseeing opportunities. There are a few museums and theaters that may or may not have shows you're interested in, but not a vast amount else. I'm sure others would disagree, and that's certainly their right; but my impression has largely been lots of highway interchanges and the empire state plaza in all its brutalist glory (in stark contrast to the actual capitol building).

Glens Falls and the Lake George area have many things to see and do. There's plenty of touristy stuff (including a comparatively small 6 flags park), shopping, some natural areas. Saratoga Springs has a long history with horse racing (and a museum and hall of fame) and a decent if smallish auto museum. There are various historical buildings and areas throughout. The Lake George RV Park gets very good reviews and recommendations; I haven't stayed there myself.

I would suggest instead, or in addition, a stop at one of the very pretty state parks in the Finger Lakes region, such as Watkin's Glen or Letchworth. Letchworth state park exceeded my expectations; it's a stunning area.
  • Arrowhead Marina and RV Park in Schenectady, right on the Mohawk River. Stayed there on our way from Cape Cod to Niagara last year. FHU, cable and WiFi available.
  • Yes, indeed, I do have a good recommendation. The Arrowhead Marina and RV Park has some beautiful sites on the River. We stayed there a few years ago and it was one of our favorite stops.

The address is actually Glenville, NY, a suburb of Schenectady.
