Flew into La Paz, Bolivia at 11,500 to 12,000 ft several years ago, and got very good advice and care from natives who deal with this very thing all the time. Their advice was (1) lots of water, (2) take aspirin for same reason heart patients take it, to thin the blood, (3) and get some oxygen! 15 minutes on an oxygen mask does wonders. The cause is oxygen deficit. The cure is get some oxygen. Then Take it easy so you don't get back into deficit mode.

If any of you have ever watched "The Amazing Race", they've been to La Paz several times in their journey. These are very fit, athletic young folks for the most part, and many of them had issues with the change in altitude. Since the racers were from all over the country, some were accustomed to elevation, but others were not, having lived at sea level, or other low elevations.
The advice given to them during this leg of the race? HYDRATE! Some of them also needed O2.
