I think that there are many types of campers and sometimes you just need to find the right park for your needs.
Some people use a campground and camper as a "hotel room". You travel to a location, park and go explore the area. You want a quiet site and clean bathrooms. You don't need a park, or wide sites, or free activities etc. You want to pay $30 or so per night since you aren't really using any "features" at the park.
Some people use a campground as a "destination". You travel to the park to relax at the park. You want wide sites, you want activities, you want pretty views, a large relaxing pool, you want quiet neighbors that you can't see etc. You are willing to pay $50+ night for all the amenities.
Some people use a campground as a "kids activity center". You want a huge playground, movies every night, a pool etc.
Some people want a campground as a "stayover". You are en route from one place to another and you just want a legal cheap place to park your camper and sleep for the night. You want to pay $20 for electric and a clean bathroom.
Some people want a campground as a "getaway". They want to go to a "rustic" campground. They want to******in a hole in the ground. They don't want a paved trail, heck they don't even want an improved path to their site.
I'm sure their are many other campgrounds that people want. Its gonna be very difficult to find one campground that meets everyones needs. I think the minimum standard for us is a nice bathhouse. It doesn't have to be a $125K bathhouse, but I don't want spiders, filth and stench. I don't mind gravel driveways, although I would prefer a moderately level campsite. I only bring enough boards to raise about 3 inches. I would expect any "improved" campsite to be within 3 inches of level over 8 feet.
Sometimes I want a cheap campground because I intend to go site seeing (NYC, Charleston, beaches, etc) but other times I want a nice bigger site when we go as a group.
