Anastasia State Park, FL - first time visit

We are in site 119, booked a year ago to travel down next month. We are right next to a ADA site and the site photos look great.

Never been to Anastasia SP. Any tips or thoughts? Its me, wife, 3 boys - 5, 3, 1 and our 70# pound "puppy". First time camping in a FL state park, we camp in SC and GA state parks all the time. Only been through St Augustine while traveling, we never stopped. The park gets great reviews as does the city.

We found a small place to eat we wanted to try - O'Steens - that seems to get good reviews on any site I can find. Might be a mad house to try and get food. Anything else for us to have on our must see or do list?

Trying to decide on bringing bikes. Our normal setup is Wife and I on our mountain bikes with 5yr on a tag-a-long and other two in a bike trailer. Works well some parks and cities and others its too tight or congested to ride safely/easily.

How close is the beach? We camp at Edisto Island SP, SC every year and that is literally on the beach right behind the dunes.

Any fun kids stuff come to mind other than playing on the beach?

Thanks for any tips!
  • Last year at Halloween we stayed in St Augustine for two days. We didn't stay at Anastasia park but went to the fort and checked it out. That was very interesting. We also played putt putt golf on the main road across from the fort.
  • Anastasia is a very nice park close to the beach and the attractions in St. Augustine Beach, and not to far from the old historic part of town. The State Park beach is a pretty long walk or short bike ride from the campground. Only problem is no dogs allowed on that beach. You can drive to St. Augustine Beach where you can drive right onto the beach and park. The is a charge during season, and while I am pretty sure dogs are permitted in the off season, I am not sure about the summer.

We might not be too much help with family restaurants since we head more toward adult oriented taverns, but not too far from the campground are "The Gypsy Cab Company" and "The Black Fly", both of which are good. Down the other way toward St. Augustine Beach is the Sunset Grill which is another local favorite. You should try to get to the "World Famous Oasis" to the south on A!A, good food, but pretty much a drinking spot. Out on Route 1 there is every chain restaurant you ever saw if the kids are more into that.

There are a couple of trolly tours that cruise around the historic district that the kids might - if I remember correctly, one is made up like a train - and that would give you the lay of the land to see where you might want to go back to. The lighthouse and the Alligator Farm are both near the campground.
  • We are gonna be there mid June Site 110. Good loop. It is a short walk or bike ride to the beach and store. They have free wifi at the store area. Look on Google maps or earth to get an ideal of the layout.
  • Check out the city's many historic areas. Some of the oldest European sites in the entire nation. The Castillo de San Marcos is a great visit, St George street is near the visitor center which is also nice. The trolly service's are a great way to get some of the entire city's history and architecture and you can hop on and off as needed at designated locations. The St Augustine Alligator farm is near the park and very popular. There are nice beaches at the park. Have fun
  • Thanks for the tips! We are going mid June for 8 days. Really looking forward to getting down there. I'll be sure to check out the trollys, I'm sure the boys would love that.
  • We stayed there for 4 nights last fall. You can ride your bikes into town from the park and it is a lot easier than trying to park your car or truck. Make sure to visit the old fort on the waterfront - great example of masonry forts built during that period. O'Steen's is a great place to eat and is between the park and town. They are cash only and closed on Sunday and Monday. Outstanding shrimp and scallops! We ate there twice!

It is a nice ride south to Daytona on Highway 1. Lots to see and do in the area.

    Have a great trip!
  • If you hit the tide right you can bike out to the point...not for kiddies but perhaps one adult alone? Sand must be hard enough...if not it is a workout!

Kiddies at that age...sand and lots of it...all thing beach!
