Fun to see that someone else plans trips the same way I do, after lots of preliminary research (half the fun!) ...Google map route plus a spreadsheet. Then I put it on a calendar. Then put in a binder with all my email confirmations. After the trip, I add the individual campground info sheets. Good reference tool for booking sites if you go back.
I know others prefer to wing it, and we do sometimes, but I like to find through research and book ahead for best places to stay that sell out early. Love a campsite with a fabulous view.
I find it relaxing to get up in the morning, enter the address into the GPS and hit the road, knowing my plan for the day with plenty of time built in for extra stops to see interesting stuff. I find it distracting to go through a drill of "where will we stay tonight and will they have space?"
That area was one of the best trips of my life in 2011. We're going back to places we missed this year. Have a ball!
PS my spouse and I each won a calendar contest with photos taken on that trip...one from Goblin Valley taken looking up from the goblins... and one taken after a thunderstorm at Dead Horse Point SP.
