I remember when the alaska pipeline was being built hearing folks crying how it would destroy all the caribou by blocking their travel routes.
Then when I saw it I saw caribou hugging the pipeline, they werent afraid of it, it provided a windbreak in some spots, and since the oil is kept at 140 degrees, it ended up saving thousands from freezing.
Saving the wildlife is a fallacy in many cases, and good fodder to feed the misinformed. Usually the same people who would block the safest method of moving oil (pipeline) and force the same oil to travel by rail or barge.
