Any Insider Information on Memphis?

I am planning a trip to Memphis and would like to see Graceland and St Jude Hospital. After that I am open to ideas on campgrounds, places to eat and things to do while in the area.
  • When you are looking for the Rendezvous, yes the entrance is in an alley and you walk right past the trash dumpsters. Adds to the experience, but the ribs are great.

An RV Park to consider is Tom Sawyer. It is in West Memphis so you will have to drive to the Memphis attractions. Check with the park however before driving there. It is located right on the banks and I mean "right on" the Mississippi River and if the river is high it is under water. It is a great spot for barge/tug watching since they go right by your site.
  • And the Gibson Guitar factory tour is pretty interesting. The National Civil Rights Museum is a good stop too. The W C Handy, father of the blues home/museum is just off the end of Beale Street. The duck walk at the Peabody was a hoot to watch.

Didn't eat at the Rendezvous though highly recommended I couldn't bring myself to eat BBQ in a restaurant with white tablecloths. Did eat at Blues City Cafe at 2nd & Beale and the ribs were great!

Once in downtown look for folks wearing safari helmets and carrying satchels. Go speak to them and they will have lots of info about local places to visit or eat. The satchels are filled with brochures and some are helpful. They put us onto the free shuttle that took us to Graceland and back into town for Sun Studios tour.

    Enjoy

While downtown go by the Peabody Hotel. They are known for the ducks that they keep on the roof and have a big ceremony every morning when they bring them down to the lobby to spend the day in the fountain. You can call for the time. Also go by the Rendezvous Restaurant which is downtown. They are known around the world for their dry rubbed ribs. Not my favorite but they are a big deal and it is a unique place. A trip out to Mud Island which is in the Mississippi River also used to be pretty interesting. Have fun.
  • no shortage of good bbq in memphis....I would recommend the rendevous and maybe a stop by the peabody hotel for the duck march.
  • We stayed at the Graceland RV park last summer. Easy walk to Graceland.
As mentioned Beale Street, also Sun Studio tour. where Elvis did his original recording, and the Rock and Soul Museum. There is a free shuttle from the Hard Rock Hotel, right beside campground, to these attractions and back. If you go to Beale street for the evening you can also book a shuttle at the hotel back after the free shuttle stops running. I think it cost $5 each.
Lots of good bar b q places to choose from!
We stopped at one of the Memphis tourism places outside the city and bought tickets for the attractions as a package and saved quite a bit on the individual prices.
  • Do a Google search for `Memphis tourism' and take your pick. Also search this Forum in the RV Parks section for `Memphis'.
  • Stay at Graceland RV Park next to the Graceland complex.
    Very short walk to Graceland.
Have a Pink Limo pick you up (free) and go eat BBQ.
    At least one option.

Double ditto. Enter Memphis TN at Tripadvisor.com as well. It's a great resource for locating good restaurants, sightseeing spots, and even campgrounds. You can see ratings for these places at that website.
