Any recommendations campgrounds SD???

hello, will be going on vacation in june to Mt Rushmore SD, first time in that area. Any recommendations for a campground in the area to use as a home base for a few days to see the sites in the area???
will have a 23ft TT and would like full hook ups if possible. doesn't have to be fancy and need one that allows a small dog.
thanks for any help and info.

  • Rafter J Bar Ranch is our favorite spot. The base camp sites are too close together for my taste, but they are near the pool. The rest of the place is great. The Mount Rushmore KOA is huge, but crowded. The phrase "cattle pen" comes to mind. I would spend at least a week in the Black Hills if you have the time.
  • Agreed on the KOA, it can be noisy/busy with lots of kids. Rafter J is really nice, just down the road from the KOA.
  • The Mt. Rushmore KOA is great if you have kids, we plan on going there with our great-granddaughter this spring. However if we were there without her we would stay at either Rafter Bar-J, or Chris' Campground in Spearfish. Both are much more peaceful than the KOA, and cheaper of course. :)
  • We stayed at the Custer SD KOA, the manager and his wife are great people.
