Any sites available where you are at in lower TX?

We are in Waco and want to head further south but not into Mexico. We do like full hookups and this is our first year down south so we are new and know that a lot of places are full or filling up. Don't need a lot of activities and yes we are over 55.
  • The only stretch I really ever had issues with finding parks is from Victoria to Corpus Christi. Victoria was never a problem until the oil boom, Corpus Christi is simply not my cup of tea YMMV.

From Waco If you want to keep to the key snowbird route(s) you can either head to San Antonio or Rockport. Since this is your first time head over to Rockport on 77. Your driving nerves will thank you, and you can always do San Antonio on your way back (TAKE THE NEW TOLL ROAD NORTH from there to past Austin.)

If you get hitch itch in Rockport (we did) head down to the RGV on 77. If you're young (body and/or mind) and like a party town feeling head to SPI, if you like bingo, happy hour, and dulcimer lessons head west on 83 (lot's of park models.) If you just want a good taste about the valley hold up somewhere in Harlingen to San Benito and take the TV around.

This really seems to be a slow year for snowbirds, don't think you'll have any issues finding parks along your route. Our park which is 100% full by now has many spots open.

BTW, you're missing Hill Country which many enjoy. Best time for that area is October/November & March/April.
  • Your timing might be right on as this cold spell we are now in is scheduled to break about the time you would get here. I agree that you should drop the rig at a park for a short stay and look around before committing to a longer period.
aauummm mentioned Fun and Sun. That is the park we are at in San Benito. So far we have had lots of fun but little sun. It is coming though. There is sites here as in most parks in the RGV but have had a jump in taken spaces since Christmas.

Hopefully some people that are actually down in the RGV will reply and give you a good idea of the situation. We are currently at home but from previous stays in the Valley I would guess that there are plenty of open spaces. With 400-500 RV parks stretching from Mission in the west to Harlingen/Brownsville/South Padre in the east end of the Valley, there has to be plenty of open spaces. All of those parks are in the US and most are at least 10 miles from the Mexican border, although there are some closer. No problem.

Since you are pulling a 5th wheel, I would try to drop it somewhere along that stretch and then take a day or two to check out the parks and see what you'd like. Pick up a bunch of park brochures and use them to narrow down your list. Give them a call to see if they have any vacancies. You then might want to try one for a month and use that month to look around for one that you'd like better.

Now if some of the guys down there can reply to your post it could help you narrow down the list very quickly! One thing I know, I wouldn't stay in Waco for more than one night before heading down to the RGV where the real fun and sun is!

PS: I'm a slow typist. Pawatt got his reply in while I was still typing!! Good for him-he's an RGV expert!
  • Nearly 500 parks in the Rio Grande Valley and most have many openings. This will be the warmest area in Texas. Check the towns of Mission, McAllen, Donna, Alamo, Weslaco, San Juan, Brownsville, Harlingen, Edinburg & South Padre Island. Reservations are NOT needed.

You are headed in the right direction. Keep on coming south until you get to the Mexican border then start looking. Lots of campgrounds in the RGV (Rio Grande Valley) area.
  • We are at Rockport and many parks are full but a few have sites. Don't know about further down in the valley. There are a few sites in the park I am in. PM me if you need more information.
  • Wilderness Oaks, Coastal Oaks, Sand Dollar, and Bay View have openings in Rockport and probably a few others also
  • Come on down to Rockport, about 6 hours drive south of your location. My hose did not freeze last night and there are plenty of things to do. The county grows by 1/3 in the winter with folks such as yourself..
