Wow .... in that August desert heat that's a lot of generators to keep the air cons running! Must sound like a huge swarm of bumblebees at times.
Oddly, most folks at Burning Man are in tents. The proportion of RVers is growing but the majority would still be tenters. No thanks, I'll bring my RV instead of a tent.
Last year, the heat wasn't bad at all. The rain storm on opening day was pretty epic, though. I think we used our AC only about three times the entire two weeks we were there (hubby works the event doing traffic mitigation services so we get there early to deploy the remote cameras and data collectors and such, then stay late to pick it all back up again). I hear this year is going to be a scorcher, though. Not looking forward to that. I might just have to walk around nekkid. Interesting subject!! Have been watching the video's for a couple months. Wife and I decided when the boys get older we're going, probably when the oldest turns 10 so in another 5 years. Looks like quite a experience! Some probably wouldn't take the kids but I choose not to shelter rather teach... guess that's how who'd put it.
You may prefer to take them when they're younger, actually. At 10, they start really noticing the difference between male and female bodies and have an inkling about sex (although not what it really is just yet). I haven't seen kids over about 9 or 10 there before and very few actual teenagers. The children I've seen there are generally under 10 for some reason.
If you go, see if you can hook up with the Kidsville camp. You can look them up on the Burning Man website. Kidsville is very family oriented and a fun place to be for families. - Community AlumniI went last year and am going again this year despite needing four full days to completely detail my trailer post-event. We even had dust inside the curtain rods.
Hubby is providing traffic mitigation services for the event so I'm tagging along. He works Burning Man. I get to actually GO to Burning Man. I have serious (like medication serious) anxiety and mood issues and didn't think I'd be okay there due to the number of people but once you're there and settled in, it's a blast, especially the nights.
We were there for two weeks straight and didn't have problems with water or with our holding tanks as we were VERY careful with water consumption, plus we brought 5 7-gallon carboys of extra water, most of which went into the fresh water tank at some point. Honestly, I don't know how we didn't fill our holding tanks. They'd show nearly full at times but then later, near empty. All I can think of is evaporation due to the intense dryness there.
If you go, take a propane-fuelled generator as there are no services at all at the event. That way, you can take a spare propane tank and have AC whenever you want without dealing with trying to secure your gas can from the occasional prowlers (everywhere has prowlers, even your own neighborhood). Also, to maximize your holding tanks, try to use the porta-potties the event provides as often as you can. Let THEM deal with the problem of holding tanks. Just don't empty yours into the porta-potties. That's not cool.
That said, don't forget your bikes! Bicycles and foot are about the only ways to get around unless you have also brought an "art car", which has to be vetted by the arts committee prior to arrival. If you have a handicapped citizen placard or ID, you will get permission to use your car to get around site although parking at your destination isn't guaranteed due to the randomness of the layout.
Don't forget your tutu for Tutu Tuesday! :B - ericsmith32ExplorerInteresting subject!! Have been watching the video's for a couple months.
