Checking your camera's settings on a regular basis is an essential habit to form. The one setting I often forget to reset is exposure compensation after adjusting for indoor shooting. As your photos seem to be under exposed, this may have been part of your exposure problem.
I live in southwest Utah and have taken many photos without exposure problems with my Nikon D5000 when the settings are correct for the lighting at the time of shooting.
