Arizona for our first winter south suggestions please

The wife and I decided that if we go south for our first winter away from Wisconsin our destination would be Arizona. Since we have never done this before do you think it is practical to find maybe four different areas and divide our time between them for four months? We are looking for some suggestions on what areas to visit and maybe what areas to pass on. Any recommendations or suggestions would be appreciated.

  • You can only stay 2 weeks at a time and reservations are suggested but the Maricopa County Parks of the greater Phoenix area are awesome - nice spacious sites and lush Sonoran desert. Lost Dutchman State Park is also a winner in that area.

Any of the state parks can handle big rigs and they are great but only 2 weeks at a time.

Quartzsite mid-January is a must-do just to see the massive RV congregation. Pick your spot off I-10 and Hwy 95 and enjoy for a short time.

Yuma is the warmest spot. Further north along the Colorado River up to Havasu has a couple nice state parks.

Don't go north of Phoenix during the winter - too cold.

Tucson is nice and Benson which is east of Tucson should be checked out. . warm days and cool nights but lots to do in the area. . . Tombstone, Bisbee, Kartchner Cavererns (which has a nice campground). A day trip to Chiricahua Nat'l Monument is worthwhile. The hiking is great.

You have a great idea to check out different areas. What's great for one person isn't necessarily so for another. We love Arizona!
  • Do consider Desert Trails RV Park if you decide on the Tucson area. It's one of our all time favorite parks. We spent three winters there. http://deserttrailsrvpark.com/
  • If you want reasonable Quartzsite it is. If you are looking to 1st class resorts around Phoenix.
  • Agree with Tucson, Yuma & Apache Junction. If you decide to check out Yuma, we prefer the Foothills area which is more residential than RV park style.

I also like to go to Quartzsite in January to meet up with a lot of friends we have met through IRV2 forum and for the Big RV Tent show. I don't know if Quartzsite would be as attractive if we weren't meeting up with a large group of friends to camp with altogether in a circle in the desert.
  • I agree that, the first winter south, it's a good idea to look around and find the area that most appeals to you. The Tucson region is the prettiest but also the coldest. Personally, I'm not fond of Quartzsite but many are.
  • AZ is a great place to winter, but there are MANY variables to consider. Divide the state into 4 parts and then list the best and worst of each quarter.

We like the SW section for multiple reasons. The prices are reasonable, when compared to the other three areas. The people are much friendlier, and not as cliquish as we saw in the Phoenix area. You are close to a Mexican border town that is super safe and very tourist friendly. The weather is a whole bunch better, especially over the 2 northern areas. Great ATV/Jeep off road activities. Good fishing in both the canals and the lakes.

Some others will chime in with their take on the other 3 areas.
  • Tucson, Yuma, Quartzite, & Apache Junction. Yuma will be the warmest so be there during the coldest month.
