Auto insurance for Nuevo Progreso

This fall I would like to be able to drive into Nuevo Progresso from the US and be covered by auto insurance. Some I've talked to said AARP (Hartford) covered them 25 miles into Mexico but after talking to Hartford they said that wasn't true. I checked at a local insurance place in Texas and was quoted $400 for about 6 months. What are others doing to be covered while driving into Mexico? I was hoping for a cheaper alternative. Thanks.

  • We always use Lewis & Lewis Mexican Insurance. You MUST have Liability Insurance with a Mexican Company, NOT a USA or Canadian Company. Some USA Companies do provide Mexico Comp & Coll coverage; Progressive & Nationwide are a couple that provide full Mexico geographical coverage. A few just cover you only when you are near the border. Most people purchase the whole package, Liab, Comp & Coll thu the same Mexican Insurance Company (Lewis & Lewis is just one company) and some only Liability on the vehicle taken to Mexico. Lewis & Lewis also offers an option that covers Liability for driver only for any vehicle he or she may drive. This is what we do. We have Nationwide which covers the Motorhome for Comp & Coll in Mexico and our OLD Jeep we pull in Mexico with us does not have Comp & Coll (value is too low). I purchase the Driver Liability Insurance so the one policy covers me no matter what I drive. Therefore I have coverage when the Motorhome,Jeep and Dodge Ram (has Travelers which provides Comp & Coll within 30 miles of the border) are driven in Mexico by ME (only). A much much cheaper option! Full explanation can be found on the Lewis & Lewis site. Also beware the amount required was changed and you must now have $300,000 of coverage. I am not connected with any Insurance company in anyway. Personally I feel like they are all government mandated SCAMS.

  • Try Sanborns in McAllen Texas. You can purchase on line. If you only go into Nuevo Progresso a few times a month, purchasing insurance for each day may be cheaper. Lewis and Lewis lists their prices for daily insurance right on their home page and you can apply on line.
