AZ boondocking below 3000 feet

I tried to search but didn't come up with the right answers.

We have reservations through 2/28 in the PHX area. Before we turn for home we would like to try some boondocking on public lands. We have some dry camping experience but always at a park of some sort. We want to dip our toes into public lands boondocking for a few days. We would like to be close to civilization, and not have to drive on anything too rugged. It'd be comforting to DW to be somewhere where there are other RVers within sight. We have a 25' class C with no toad. Despite those self-limitations, we'd like to camp in a reasonably scenic spot. It doesn't matter whether it is undefined camp sites or a designated NF CG.

We are wanting to find someplace near-ish PHX or points east. OTOH I suppose the easiest intro to boondocking would be to drive the 100 miles to Q? What about the Tonto NF? Anything else we should look into? Thanks.
  • No reason to go west to Q. Try one of the FS campgrounds or dispersed camping around Roosevelt Lake (Tonto NF).
  • I don't personally know that area but here's a hint: when looking for boondocking areas in National Forests, search for dispersed camping.
