Might look into Huntington Beach State Park, south of Myrtle Beach, SC. http://www.southcarolinaparks.com/huntingtonbeach/introduction.aspx
Great nature trails, excellent beach (CG NOT beachfront but nothing between CG and the ocean except natural habitat!) Quiet setting, large sites, part of park is animal sanctuary (birders love it and alligators in the marsh!). Less than 130 sites so not too big either. No putt-putt, no glitz, just a nice campground. Far enough removed from honky-tonk of MB but close to whatever you might need. Awesome Brookgreen Gardens directly across the highway from park entrance - if he loves nature, that's a great place to be (It's an artists' colony as well. Sculpture garden, etc - very enjoyable for everyone). Highly recommend. DH and I camp there at least 10 times a year!
