I too was going to suggest Myrtle Beach camping but noticed you did state maybe NC... We visit nags head alot from here in Northern Neck usually in a family group at a rental house but have never really camped down there. There are several camp grounds however on the otter banks.
My sister has a place at LAKEWOOD RESORTS and we remaining kids all head down that way in the late SEP early Oct time frame for yearly family reunion. I always go down to Huntington Beach and hang out wishing I was setup there haha... It is a great camping location near the Ocean... Great trails and lots of wildlife...
As stated above you are not right in the middle of heavy tourism traffic but close enough to make the rounds... Easy in and out with your RV...
I always pull my off-road POPUP down to Lakewood Resorts but we usually stay in one of the Villa's there where other family members stay. Then on the way back to VA we go the Smokey Mtn route thru Gatlinburg and do two or three days there as well. All of our roads usually go thru Gatlingburg haha...
