Closer than Dixie Caverns campground, but still not "close" (about 20 miles, 30 minutes from the main stretch on Bent Mountain) is one of our favorite campgrounds, Camp Alta Mons.

It is a relatively rustic campground; we prefer the sites on the South Fork of the Roanoke River that have water and electric connections but no sewer. The bathroom and showers are in the part of the campground that is across the state road and several hundred yards away. The "river" at this point is just a large creek most of the time, but it is very peaceful.
Be warned that you will literally be driving from near the top of the mountain "down into the holler" though, on a narrow, crooked road. If you have access to a car or pickup this is no problem, but I would not want to make this trip twice daily with a big ol' Class C coach!
Bent Mountain is a beautiful area with lots to see. We hope you get to visit and enjoy your stay!
