Best beachcombing in Virginia?

We are probably go to be in the Virginia Beach general area within the next couple of weeks. Interested in finding a campground within walking distance of a good beach, sutiable for walking and beachcombing. Not really interested in "touristy" things. We like to kick back, read good books and walk on the beach.

What do you recommend?
  • Military? Ft Belvoir. I think it has just reopened a bit a go and is really nice. On the water. Not cheap though.
  • The refuge is currently closed. Thanks DC. Did you hear the Redskins have agreed to change their name? Yep, they are taking the Washington out as it offends way more people :).
  • Kiptopeake State park is within walking distance of the beach. It has full hookups and cable. Not alot to do in the immediate area other than right across RT 13 is a wildlife refuge.Kiptopeake is just north of the Chesepeak Bay Bridge Tunnel.
  • First Landing looks good. Thanks for the tip.

Sandbridge seems a little pricey but it does seem to have great facilities. Thanks for the tip.
  • Our favorite in VA Beach is Outdoor Resorts in Sandbridge - http://www.outdoor-resorts.com/vb/

It's a short walk to the beach and the campground is in Back Bay - Sandbridge is a laidback, low key resort area.
  • First Landing SP is the ONLY campground in the Va Beach area with direct access to the beach, and it's not exactly Ocean Front, it's actually just inside the mouth or opening of Chesapeake Bay. Campground season runs from March 1st to the 1st Monday in December...
  • First Landing State Park. Don't know when they close for season, might be end of Oct.

    VIRGINA CAMP GROUNDS

My kids go down that way alot and setup just off the beach. Some places have hookups and allows tents setup close to the hookup trailers.
I believe they go to the NORTH LANDING BEACH area...
