Best campgrounds in NC mountains

Mama Gerties was awesome, but definitely on the side of a mountain and no pool if that matters. Super clean, beautiful setting, awesome individual showers. Didn't care for Boone KOA, rather old, the I-row sites are tiny. Sounds like Toe River and Brown Mountain are worth looking at. Not sure about Campfire Lodgings. I always check rvparkreviews too.

I hate putting it out there, but Toe River is one of our favorite mountain campgrounds. Sites are level and easy to get into. You can play in the river or in the big field. They have a pool and lots of kids to play with. You are not far from the blue ridge parkway, Spruce Pine and Mt Mitchell. I'll choose this over Boone KOA and Mama Gerties. Mama Gerties is pretty, set on a side of a hill so not good for biking and hiking.

We finally got to Stone Mountain and really enjoyed it. We will definitely go back next summer. Lots to do in the park. But the temps are still not "mountain cool" enough for me. We enjoyed playing in the river at widows creek falls.

Mile High Campground. Straight up from Maggie Valley, Elevation 5600+ ft. No hookups, no dump station, even the office has no power. Business done by cell phone. On the crest of the mountain with views off both sides.

Another vote here for Mama Gertie's! Peaceful, amazing views, super clean. As said before nothing activity wise for kids, but my 8 year old nature boy LOVED it! Streams, small waterfalls, various rocks, tons of different plants/trees, critters from bugs to small animals, he had a ball and so did Mom and Dad ;-)

X2 for Mama Gerties but nothing for kids to do. The views are fantastic.

We loved Mama Gerties in Swannanoa. On their upper level sites, they have plenty of room for fifth wheelers. The other sites were a little tight, but doable. Didn't care for for the KOA or the one near Tom Johnson in Marion.

Our favorite CG in that area is Brown Mountain Beach Resort near Lenoir. Beautiful sites on Wilson Creek. Full hook ups and wi fi. Private bath house. Trout fishing, tubing, swimming in the creek, hiking, white water rafting, etc. The owners are awesome people.

We actually like the Boone KOA...while the sites are not huge, you shouldn't have a problem getting in there. However, I do recommend that you do not stay in a certain section. The first time we went, I did the reservations online and parked in the spot assigned to me. It was not ideal for our camper that is 35' in length total. The second time, I called them and told them not to put me in the same spot. They put me in a row a couple over and was a lot better. I would recommend walking to the site and look first. It's not a huge park.

Someone mentioned Mountain Stream. And they are correct, there is nothing for kids to do. While we found the park to be pretty, the owners or those that were running it when we were there, were not the nicest people. You are given the rules of the campground at check in. You are told to not stream movies on the wifi and not to go on facebook. They are limited on their data and the company will freexe their internet for a period of time if they go over that data and its what they use for the business. Plus they give youlogin information that is specific to each site, so they keep track of what you are doing. Along with the rules at check in, they are posted on the bulletin board and the guy walks around with a copy with him. If you have a dog, they must do their business on the gravel and not on the grass because according to their rules, a dogs "business" has germs. (I guess they keep the wildlife from doing their business there as well...lol) They do have a fenced off dog park that is grass that you can use though. Quite time is posted as 9pm on their sign. My daughter and a co workers grandkids were right in front of the sign and about 30' from our campers. At 830, the guy cmae and told them it was quiet time. And the next day, the kids were playing in the stream and tossing some rocks. The guy went in between us and the grandparents and straight to the kids and told them not to throw the rocks. He never once came and said anything to us. They had a pot luck dinner and we didn't go to it. We were already pissed at the guy by then. My co worker and his wife went and they came back and said no one there would even talk to them or eat the food they brought. That is was more like a bunch of regulars that must frequent it. They said they would never go back either. Might be ok for an older couple with no kids.

Our favorite mmountain campground so far is Stone Mountain State Park. Along with the right price, the roads and parking pads are paved. There is so much to do in the park. Hiking, fishing, swimming, historical stuff, etc. There is an abundance of wildlife there as well. Outside the park and to the north is the BRP. There are also several great places to check out within 30-60 minutes. Look on our website in the places section. We have done a write up there. There are so many variables. Depending on what you like. Our favorite "private" is Raccoone Holler, in Glendale Springs. On the BRP, and never need AC. We also enjoy Orchard Lake in Saludia. Swimming, small zip line, canoes. Honey Bear in Boone is good IF you get the right site. Close to Boone. BTW. I didn't feel The Boone KOA was hard to get to. But we just drove thru. Nice place though.

There is a twisty road to both Orchard Lake, and Honey Bear. But not hard to drive.

On the BRP itself. If you can live for a couple days with out Electricity. We like Linville Falls, and Julian Price. Both are high enough up, that no AC is needed or wanted. A huge blanket maybe, but not AC. Linville, is near Linvile Falls, and GrandFather Mountain. JP is near Boone, and Blowing Rock.

Another Great CG is Toe River Campground. Has a pool, fishing, playgrounds and tubing. However. You can't tow up HWY 80 to it. You need come in from Spruce Pines.

Fact is. the best mountain CGs are not on main roads. So some twistys will have to be driven. Unless, You stay at the foot of the mountain. Places like Steel Creek, Mountain Stream, Yogie in Marion and Green Mountain in Lenoir are much easier to get to. But you will need AC down there.
Steel Creek has some cold water to swim in, and a water slide. First come first served.

We liked Mountain Stream RV Park in Marion. It is right on the river. There is nothing for children though.
