I would also dry camp at the track and have done it before. We were in a tent but some friends were in an RV. They were in a parking lot on a hill above the pits with a great view.
Can't help you regarding campgrounds in the area.
Got to agree it is a great place. We were there the first year they opened. Was at the old museum in town previously. The old one was nothing compared to the new one.
