This is the first time I've heard that "more state parks with camping" is a bad thing. True, somebody's private boondocking spot will get disturbed, but isn't that why there are wheels on an RV?
This great county is loaded with prime boondocking spots and I don't think one individual's inconvenience should be a factor in whether to build a new state park, which there are not nearly enough of.
First, this isn't someone's "private boondocking spot". It's a designated dispersed camping area right off the highway with many users all the time.
Second, as far as building a new state park, all that the state has done is take over all the BLM campsites along the river, raising the rates from $5 or $10 a night to $16 in addition to adding the need for a $7/day state parks pass. So the cost for essentially the same facilities as the BLM charged $5 to $10 a night is now up to $23 under state management. I hadn't heard about the state wanting to take over the Salida East site, but it doesn't surprise me. They are trying to force everyone to pay their exorbitant rates for some decidedly second class accommodations by eliminating all other possible public camping spots along the river. Boo on Colorado State Parks.
