"Boo on Colorado State Parks"? OMG, those evildoers!!! I suppose it's "yay" on boondocking at Walmart?
FWIW, I've rafted the Upper Arkansas--not sure if that's the section being discussed here--but if they put a Walmart in there it would definitely be an eco-friendly improvement for that overrun area (IMO).
IMO again, there's a lot of people on this forum who fail to see that "Prime Boondocking Spot" is another way of saying "Vacant lot Waiting to be plowed under in the search for Oil Shale". If Colorado State Parks can't properly manage this area, then Walmart will be allowed to try. Prioritize!
I don't see why Walmart appears here. :h Never camped at a Walmart and never will. Salida East is already BLM land, don't see how a Walmart would be built there (there's already a Walmart about four miles down the road anyway that already accepts overnight campers). Read my post and you will see that the state of CO has already taken over former BLM CG's and doubled, tripled, and quadrupled the cost to camp at the same spot.
This isn't just some wide spot off the highway. The BLM has installed pit toilets, installed a graded gravel road and large parking lot along with a boat ramp.
No, the "Boo" is because the state is trying to force campers to pay their exorbitant fees for former BLM sites by eliminating boondocking locations. Why should the state of Colorado be allowed to take it over? I guess you could say they are properly managing it in that they are taking an asset paid for by the US taxpayers (through the BLM) and charging fees that go solely to Colorado state parks.
