Bolivar peninsula, Tx. Pt. Arthur to Galveston?

Tx. 87 along the bolivar peninsula looks to have some promising places (google earth view) to boondock behind the dunes off the beach.
Having travelled along it 3 years ago, we know Its a very lightly traveled road, the beaches are soft, steep and gravelly, We looked then for a turn out firm enough to let us stop & enjoy the solitude.
We'll be passing through there again soon with hopes to find a spot. Any suggestions?
  • we have been at rollover pass for 4 days, as a guest ,boondocking, on the adjacent southeast landowners land , by permission of the landowner and pass staff. We have gifted the GIlchrist community association an amount greater than their parking fees in support of their legal battle to keep rollover pass open .

  • In between there are turnouts but probably NOT for a big 5ver.
BTW at rollover pass there is some boondocking if you like fishing and crowds. It is very popular.
  • Thanks,
both places look interesting, the crystal beach website explains beach locations. In between there does not look like any spot for a big 5er. -- I'll keep you posted if we find one.

  • after you come through High Island Texas the road turns right to run towards the ferry to Galveston.
Just at the turn you will see a sand road to the left. Take it. Underneath the sand you will find the old pavement from the road that washed away 10-12 years ago.
Also just as you approach the ferry to Galveston you will see Rettilon ST (? spelling). This will lead you to the flats a popular beach camping spot. YOu will see lots of campers on the beach. I take my 27 foot class out on it.
Remember you need a $10.00 sticker to be legal.
