Joe, I had a great gig right down town L.A. starting in 1968 and know of the woe of finding an obscure camp that's close to the basin. One of our fav's was Pacifico Mt., up the 2 and N3, right on Pacifico Mt. rd. to the cool 7124 foot summit. Great boondocking. No services. View almost unobstructed 360 degrees. I'm not sure of fire closures.
