Lots of privately owned land in the East vs. lots of public lands in the west. Want some ideas? Look at the NFS websites for the forests around you. Under "Recreation", they'll have a page to camping. Often there is a subcategory on "Dispersed Camping" with ideas about where you could go.

Check out this link to see a list. Of course only some are boondocking tales, but peruse this list to get some ideas about places to go in your neck of the woods.
