The vast majority of the time the farther away from society you are the safer you should be. One would think that the common thugs, bullies, thieves and whatnot would congregate where there are lots of opportunities for them. I would think that mostly only the truly evil predators would be searching for victims in remote places. They are the ones who avoid crowds, and they are the most dangerous. Thank the lord they are few and far between. I believe a good dog is about one of the best security alarm systems money can buy. I also carry Bear spray ordered off of amazon. Sprays 30 feet and its a huge can. Perfect solution for those who just want some peace of mind, all while avoiding the hassle and red tape that comes with other choices in protection. It seems to me there is a spike in bullying these days by mostly unarmed would be tough guys. Bear spray is your friend.
