Boondocking

I hate to have to ask, but what is boondocking. Someone said I have dry camped but never boondocked. What is the differance. Thanks
  • lots of differing opinions on this, but nothing to fight about :)
I think of boondocking as being out in the wilderness with nobody else around to break the silence, etc
dry camping can be anywhere there are no hookups, but it can be at walmart or an interstate rest stop (overnight)
  • Dry camp = anywhere without hookups but could be in campground with other amenities. Possibly designated camp sites with bathrooms, fire pits etc.

Boondocking = out in the boonies without hookups. No designated camp sites or amenities of any kind. Just camp where you feel like it as long as its legal to do so.

    Both are without hookups.

You can boondock in your driveway. :)

We stay in Forest Service campgrounds all the time. Picnic table, fire pit, restrooms of some sort, and without any connections but would never think that I was boondocking, just dry camping in a developed campground.
When we head out Into the forest, without any designated camping area, that is boondocking, in my humble......

The purists say boondocking is where you are on BLM land without any designated camping sites, not in a USFS CG without any hookups... dry camping. Like Lwiddis... not enough difference to worry about as both require you to manage your power and water usage.

  • Some say parking lot vs. a campsite. I'm not picky on the difference and dry/boon 95+% of the time.
