We will be traveling through west Texas in mid-January and would like to detour to the RGV/Padre Island area for about a week. We've not been there before. I realize that snowbirds will likely fill most of the sites, but maybe someone would have a suggestion where we might best look for a short-term site.

Nearly all the parks will have sites open without reservations, maybe not the prime sites but there is always room at the inn. Nearly 500 parks in the Valley. On South Padre Island there are 2 County Parks with hookups and a Nice KOA.

You will find openings just about everywhere. We like to stay inland a ways, find Padre nice for a visit but usually windy and cooler than inland. Stay around Donna then it is a short drive to Progreso Mexico.

I have only one warning is you do not want to be on the island during spring break!!! The park we are at has 1400 spaces and has never been full the 8 years we have been there, so no worry about parking.

Keep in mind that it can easily be 20 degrees above or below the averages, we just got thru about 10 days below average so hopefully we can now be at or above average.

We will be heading to the KOA on SPI. The day after Xmas.
We are booked for 3 months. There are usually sites available.
But call ahead. You can look it up on line and call them direct.
Nice level sites. Mabe a little close, all depending on the site.
This will be our third year.

We're at Casa Del Valle in Alamo, plenty of sites available and the same with the sister park Kenwood in La Feria. I think Victoria Palms is down about 40% correct me if I'm wrong. Lots of weekly and monthly specials and don't forget Passport America.

I will be traveling down that way with another couple in January and staying for about 6 weeks or so to get away from the worst of the cold (hopefully.) We'll be staying in Mission. What's the weather like down there now and any idea what it will be like in January and February from any of you longtime Winter Texans? This will be our first trip to the area.
