You really do need to narrow down where your California destination is.
As a rule of thumb anywhere in California below 2000 ft elevation will rarely have freezing temperatures. There may be a few hours overnight that hit or are near freezing but not full days of freezing temps.
You could leave a 60 watt bulb in a lamp on and it would provide enough heat to keep things from freezing.
