There are tons of campgrounds in Cape May County - the next county south of Atlantic County where Atlantic City is. Many of them are within an easy half hour drive of the city. Check out this website:
Jersey Cape Campgrounds
As far as getting into the city is concerned, public transportation is limited, but parking is not too difficult - even in a truck. While you probably will not want to get into any of the casino parking garages (might be too tall) there a numerous open lots, and some street parking with meters. The casinos in the "Marina District" (as opposed to downtown on the boardwalk) have even more lot parking available.
