Campground near Charlotte

It's actually north of Charlotte and to the west of Mooresville. More like 45 minutes or more (depending on which way you go).

We've made reservations at Foothills Family Campground. Forest City NC
it is a passport of America park. Haven't been there but it looks like what we need. Slim pickings for this area. $15 per day Monday thru Thursday.

dukepower st park is now called lake norman st park....troutman, nc north of char + mooresville. nice sites but no elec at sites. in addition to those mentioned, koa statesville is just off I 77 south of statesville. it is decent but not fabulous. would be good if you are planning to tour raceshops in mooresville + is near enough to hike at LN st park. restaurants nearby in statesville. will be tough with race fans in area for Mem. day wkend

Glad to hear a first hand account. I have not stayed there but just read some reviews several years ago. I lived a few miles away so never had the need to camp there.

McDowell County preserve...Near NC/SC border off I77 near to Carowinds.
Not many/ if any FHU though. They do have a dump and nice bath houses.

Glad to hear a first hand account. I have not stayed there but just read some reviews several years ago. I lived a few miles away so never had the need to camp there.

Didn't stay there, but did a drive through after visitng Carowinds for the day. The tent site are had nice green lush grass that appeared taken care of. The other part of the park was the total opposite.

Drove through there the same day we drove through carowinds...sites were terrible (unlevel). They also appeared to be somewhat small sites. AS we drove through, the back end of the trailers were very close to the road. It's also a good bit hilly in there, which doesn't help with the levelness of the sites. Hate to say it, but it was worse than Carowinds...lol It's bad when you have to admit that Crosscreek and Wildlife Woods up in Denver are better and that's bad!

Looking online, Apollo RV Park, doesn't appear to be a bad alternative. Rates are decent. Not far from racetrack and basically right next door to Hendricks Motor Sports.

We actually ended up staying right at the track. We wanted to attend the Allstar race only so there was lots of camping in the family sections. Sites would have been closet sized had it been full, but ended up not having too many neighbours.
