Campground suggestions for St Louis. Close to Arch

We always stay at the Casino Queen located across the river from the Arch.
You might want to plan ahead for the tram tickets that takes you to the top of the Arch. Also, the tram is down until March, 2017

Besides the Casino Queen, there's also the St. Louis RV Park, a few blocks from the City Museum (and a few more from the arch). "Park," in this case, is used in the sense of "parking lot," albeit with hookups.

IMHO if you have to end up choosing between the arch and the City Museum, choose the City Museum. Your kids (and you, if you let yourself) will have an absolute blast.

For just a short stay, use the Casino RV park. I don't believe they'll let the kids inside but staying in the RV park is o.k. I think there's a shuttle to the Arch.

Casino Queens, shuttle only takes you to the casino, hotel or Metro Station. I think for one night your best bet is Casino Queens

Casino Queen worked really well for us. You can see the Arch across the river from the campground.

They'll shuttle you, very short trip, to the Metro station and after riding the train a few minutes across the river, you'll get off at the first stop and walk to the Arch through a park-like area. (Call when you return for a shuttle back to the RV campground.) If you want to drive over, there are some parking lots available.

The museum under the arch is very good with interesting films, though temporarily closed for renovations according to the website. Lots to learn there about Jefferson, the westward expansion, and Lewis & Clark, and also about the engineering and construction of the Arch.

Definitely ride the tram to the top!

Another fun thing to do - take a short riverboat ride on the Mississippi. Board just down the bank from the Arch. There's a little sandwich place there while you wait.

How about PERE MARQUETTE STATE PARK in Alton, IL. You can literally take the FERRY across the Mississippi River to St. Louis. What a cool experience it was for my kids to put your car on the ferry and ride over.

Yes, Pere Marquette is about 30 mins from St. Louis. HOWEVER, you are in one of the oldest and nicest state parks in IL. Tons of HIKING TRAILS, and a great lodge with a buffet and dinner.

That's my suggestion...check it out.

If you are passing through St.Louis with young ones in tow, be sure to stop at the Cahokia Mounds. (X6-I55, X24-I255) St.Louis was first called "Mound City". What is left is at the park there. It is not what you think you know about civilization before Europeans cme along. Plan at least a couple of hours for the museum and a couple more for the grounds.

When passing through St. Louis, we usually stay at Casino Queen. But, with our usual timing, the RV park was not open.

I think my entire family would like the mounds. Thanks for the suggestion. I had no idea. It's very close as well, which is a big bonus. We only have one day, so we have to prioritize but I think we can fit it all in and not feel overly rushed. City Museum appears to be open late, so we could do the mounds and then the Arch, have a meal out somewhere and still get to City Museum before calling it a night.

Looks like we'll plan on staying at the Casino Queen. It opens one week prior to our scheduled arrival.
