We travel this route quite often going down to Henderson Beach.
Oak mountain park is excellent. However, if you are using your GPS it will give you bad directions (unless they have corrected it in the past year), so follow your map.
We try to get a night at Cullman. It is fine for an overnight and the folks here are very very nice. Quick off and on for I65.
Glad to hear there is a new KOA south of Birmingham. May try that on our next trip down.
