What are you trying to see/be near? You want to make sure you're on the right side of DC and in the right area of Northern Virginia. That area can turn a 1 hour drive into 3 at a drop of the hat.

In Richmond, we stayed at South 40 Campground. Reviews aren't great, but our actual stay was good.
We also stayed at Kosmos Village in Glen Allen, VA. Honestly, it was kind of a **** hole but good for an overnight.
Further north, if you're a Thousand Trails member- the Harbor View campground in Colonial Beach, VA is decent.
And then, as mentioned- Bull Run is beautiful w/ full hookups. You can't beat Cherry Hill for convenience to the city (with a price tag that's up there).
