Why stay in the Fairgrounds? There are several campgrounds within 15 miles of the fair.
We are staying at a place called Shannons Sanctuary in Brownfield ME for the Fair this year.. (We stayed there last year too) It's not fancy, but it has elec, water, sewer and its $32 a night. Also has WiFi in the check in cabin if you need to check mail or something. It was quiet (well except for our kids running around playing LOL).
Only the tent sites are right on the Saco river but each RV site is easy to get in to, level and they surround a large field. It's definitely 'rustic' but the on site Manager, Marcia, is very nice and we enjoyed the laid back quiet atmosphere last year.
As for getting to the Fair.. without traffic it's 15 minutes away.. It took us 45 minutes though since we didn't leave early.. I think we left around 10:30am to go there.
When we were leaving the Fair, we walked by the campground area and I remember saying to my self, "There is no way I would want to do that"
To each his own though, some folks want to be there rather than having to drive in..
Here's the site we had at Shannons..
from our neighbors site..
and the field area..
