I live in Ft.Myers/Cape Coral. You also need to be aware of parks in less than desirable areas - there are many. There are some great parks in North Ft. Myers in the Rt 41 corridor. The drive to the beaches is relative as once you get near San Carlos Blvd, it is an hour just from that point most days.
NFM is close to downtown without being right in it, and the access to all major roads and the interstate cannot be beat.
Southern Ft. Myers/Lee county is a traffic Clusterf%$*k.
