Campsite Suggestions for Newbie

I've never been a snowbird before, but am considering a "trial" of three weeks next January. The things is, I still work, so good (and free) wifi access is a must. Cable TV hookups and some degree of campsite ambience (trees, water, not overcrowded, etc) would be the other two search factors. My trailer can live on 30-amp service. We live in Missouri, and would be interested in southern Alabama, southern Mississippi, or the Florida panhandle. Any suggestions? Thanks!
  • look at Live Oak Landing in Freeport FL in the panhandle. About 11 miles to the beach. You can read reviews on www.rvparkreviews.com
I would get your own Wi-Fi hotspot from Verizon. They have pay as you go plans or contract plans that you can put on "vacation" 2x per year up to a certain number of months. Most parks do not have reliable wi-fi and it's not as secure as your own.
  • Be prepared to have a back up plan on the internet, IE Verizion MIfi or similar, in my extensive travels good campground internet has been few and far between
  • If you require Internet access for business purposes, bring your own. Free Wi-Fi hotspots are not designed for that. If you just need periodic access to email, social media, etc, you can get by on campground Wi-Fi.
  • Hi,

Look at Mellenicom for wobbly wide web access $70 for 20 gigs of bandwidth. No contract. Piggy backs on the Verizon network.

Another option may be to add a data package to your cell phone, and tether it to your computer.
  • Get a phone that has "hot spot" capability and use that for your internet access especially if you're really depending upon wifi for work. Granted, you have to pay for the service on your phone, but the peace of mind it's always there and ready to go at any minute is worth the price! Don't depend upon campground internet access. Once the bandwith is exhausted by everyone else using it, your computer will come to a standstill.

I use my phone hot spot for my work computer (did that in Florida over Christmas this year), my I-pad, and my lap top computer. Works well.
  • Thanks. I work for AT&T so am good on the wifi/hotspot tutorials (and not good with the Verizon recommendations :) ). Live Oak Landing looks like a great suggestion. I like its' proximity to Destin. Any other ideas?
  • Hi srennier,

Just make sure AT&T works where you plan to go. I live in Saskatchewan and coverage is not great in ND where I love to camp.

I wish the companies would cooperate and give access to their networks to all users--everyone would benefit--particularly the consumers.
  • We're doing a "Taste of Snowbirding" and stayed several days at Gulf State Park, AL; then went to north central Florida at Starke. We are yoyoing with warm and sub-freezing temps..... We're not really set up to be permanent at sub-freezing temps, so have been winterizing the black and gray tanks every other night, it seems. Be prepared for those temps, too....
