I agree that the media is to blame for creating this fear. If the OP was doing his homework, there is a lot of violence in Canada also! Just this last week Vancouver police posted a warning about some ash-holes who are going around sucker-punching random people in the downtown area. So far they have managed to kill 3 innocents. Not as sensational as being shot, maybe, but the end result is the same. Common sense says to just stay away from downtown.
