To the OP. We are Canadian and travel routinely in the US. We are down here now and have noticed no shortage of Canadian snowbirds so I would think the majority are coming down. As far as violence...meh, the mass shootings can happen anywhere in todays world. Generally the people are nice here and the south is still warm and pleasant. I wouldn't sweat the headlines.
As far as Canadians not having guns in the US, those are US rules, not Canadian. Foreigners (generally speaking) are not allowed to have weapons in the US. Gun ownership in Canada is not far off of American gun ownership. Seems to be a myth out there that gun ownership is illegal in Canada. Who knows where it starts. Hardware stores, Canadian Tire, Catalogs. Take your pick and go shopping.
