FWIW, our business news channel reported that Canadians visiting the USA this year are 8% down on previous year. So likely it's not as bad as what is being touted, assuming based on actual stats! However, as with all stats they trail reality by the time they become reported. If I'm not mistaken our exchange rate is the lowest since 2004, so in 11 years, so I dare say folks have long forgotten when we were at C$1.65 to US$1 (I've never forgotten those times!).
Also something to consider besides the dollar exchange rate, is just how many have lost jobs/contracts due to the oil decline, under $38/barrel today, almost down to 7 year low (IIRC). Here in Alberta so very many of our friends have lost jobs and not just with oil direct companies, it's having a ripple affect - ENMAX (utility company) Medical Nurse; UFA United Farmers Association - IT. Chiropractors reporting business down by over 30% YTD and it's only just starting.
Vacancy rates are increasing as mass migration out of Alberta, so rental rates are dropping by several hundred dollars. We've met many retirees that rely on a portfolio of revenue properties to fund part of their RVing retirement. Those planning on selling a property here to retire are struggling as well with sales on properties stagnant and dropping big time.
There's numerous factors coming into play right now on why folks might decide not to head south from Canada this year, not just exchange rates.
Just saying FWIW.
