I think SuperDuty raises a good point:
If you judge the US by what the nightly news programs show you'd think it was the end of the world. Here in Phoenix/Mesa I refer to them as the "nightly mayhem report" and it seems that way in most of the large urban areas.
I much prefer our home town news reports, usually consisting of how many cats the fire department rescued, and how some old lady just graduated from high school!
