Might also have something to do with aging. Fear seems to grow more when you can no longer defend yourself either physically and/or mentally. Add in a low exchange rate, and it makes for a good reason to stay in the safety of a known environment.
Might explain why most us USA RV'ing snowbirds are "packin' heat." Myself, I will no longer go to a third world countries because I can no longer defend my family with my speed and hands alone. :(
