Cedar Point is a great park if you plan it right, yes stay on the grounds at Lighthouse Point worth the money in the long run. We usually get season passes at Dorney Park that is good at all the Cedar Fair parks and try to plan trips to take advantage of them.
There are things to see and do close by and on the way it just depends what you like. we always can find something or someplace we have not seen and then just see what's around.
Check out Cleveland there are things there like the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame a nice science museum next door catch a ball game.
