I have only stayed at Rio Chama RV (2 times). Just north of the train station. Very short walk, if you want to.
They have an open car you can go to after they punch your ticket. Best view!!
The turkey & dressing is great at lunch time!
Also, the rail yard is open to the public. Ask the ticket cashier for a self guided tour of the yard. The coal tipple is supposed to the only standing and operating wooden structure (I assume that is correct). They don't actually use it. They are restoring it for demonstrations.
If you are there a second day, you can chase the train up to Cumbres Pass and get plenty of shots of the whole train huffing and puffing up to the pass.
Start out at the yard. Stand down by the water tank and get the great shot of the train blowing massive amounts of black smoke as it passes by the coal tipple.
As far as I'm concerned, you are in for a treat!!
