Another vote for Rio Chama. Leaves should be starting to change by the 2nd week of September. Even if they haven't started to change it is definitely worth the trip. Had a black bear visiting the camp ground while we were there a couple of years ago. Chama is definitely in the mountains. My wife prefers the train ride in Durango but only bacause there is more to do in Durango. Have fun in NM.
