Charleston Area

We've been to Charleston many times, at least 3 times in our camper and probably 5 times just traveling before the camper. We have stayed all 3 times at Oak Plantation on Route 17. It is clean, easy in and around the campground and the nice young gentleman in the office was so helpful. We've decided to not return to the Charleston area any longer as it is too crowded and not enough improvements to the roads to accommodate the amount of traffic due to the building boom. It is horrible to get across Route 17 if you are going left out of the campground and it is almost as bad if you turn right. This is a great place to stay though. We had hoped to stay at the Mt. Pleasant KOA, but their published price of $57 turned into $72 when I called to make a reservation. Oak Plantation was $47 with the Good Sam discount. That is a no brainer.

If you have to go to Charleston, you can because there is one in just about half of the states. That is just the cities, if you include the districts and communities there is just no telling. I was going to tell you about a lovely place just outside of Charleston MI and another near Charleston WV.

Not being any kind of a smartalic here, but states are kind of important on the internet.

I believe "most" of us knew where the OP was talking about because of the CGs, and highways mentioned..

However I know what you are saying. I feel the same way when folks talk about Top Sail beach. Of course my mind goes to top Sail Island NC.

Because James Island is VERY hard to get a reservation for. Not room for every one.

  • James Island County Park. We've also stayed at Oak Plantation, but JICP is far better, IMHO.
  • You should try James Island Co Park. It is between Foley Beach and Charleston and they have a shuttle that runs during the summer to the historic downtown area. You don't even have to move your vehicle.

It has a pool, a waterpark and a climbing wall inside the park, but extra $$ if you want to use it. They have a Christmas light display during the season.
