THANK YOU EVERYONE We have made reservations at the james county park in Charleston, SC.

I appreciate everyone comments and thoughts.

Agree with what accsys told you. James Island is our first choice but for your event Oak Plantation would do nicely, too. You have more privacy between sites at James Island; Oak Plantation is laid out a little more like a housing development and you have little or nothing between you and the neighboring sites. That may be better if you're going as a group. My only other carp about Oak Plantation is the gauntlet of speed bumps going in and out the main interior road.

You can avoid the "city" if you stay at Lake Aire which is just outside Charleston. Great place and within easy reach of downtown and surrounding attractions. We wou ldn't stay anywhere else!

Another vote for James Island if you can get in there. They have a number of "buddy" sites that would work well for small groups if you get site pairs near each other. We were there for a week couple of weeks ago, and it's a really nice park.

We've stayed at James Island and Oak Plantation and both are good choices. If you want to get 10 sites similar to each other and close together I'd go with Oak Plantation. Either one you'll look like a hero.

Some areas down that way near the Ocean front are still dealing with the Storm surge a few months back.. Might check in with whoever you pick and check on there status now...

I have friends that live in the Younges Island area and they are saying they are still having problems from the bad storm.. Edisto Beach area also...

I suspect that most of the real bad things from the storm surge have been addressed but whats left may be a bunch of little things to deal with...

Seems like the coastal camp grounds just south of Myrtle Beach north of Charleston are saying the same thing...

We are not KOA fans, but we did stay at a KOA in Mt Pleasant once during early spring. Lakeside site, FHU and wide site. Very nice staff. However if you are into Old Charleston, this may not be the place for you. It is a drive from there across the river and into the Battery area.
We have also stayed at James Island. Lot of bugs and mosquitos there (we were there with a group in the summer) It is also a long drive into Old Charleston.
Prices will be better at James Island. Food (seafood) is closer and better in Mt Pleasant (IMHO) at Shem Creek Inn, Red's Ice House and a couple more right in that immediate area. Patriot Point is a good place to spend several hours wandering around the ships and museum and grounds. On the Mt Pleasant side of the river.

James Island County Campground is fantastic, that is where we stay every time we go. Full hookups, great amenities at the park, great location with easy access to Charleston and James Island. Price is very reasonable too.

I know you didn't ask for things to do while there... but Patriots Point is an incredible experience and can take up a full day if you want. Folly Beach at James Island is a fun place to go spend time if the weather is nice.

We LOVE Charleston.

The James Island county park is very nice but difficult to get into depending on your lead time. We have found the Oak Plantation Campground to be well located and very nice as well. It is large enough you may be able to get a few sites together if you don't tarry making reservations.
