Stayed there last June for a week. Great park. Would stay there again without a second thought. - AtleeExplorer IIIf I were visiting Charleston again, I'd stay at James Island again.
I don't know about long term stays however. - ericosmithExplorerYou can come in other ways and avoid all those trees. There are a couple of options, including one that I believe they suggest on their website.

We were in Charleston last weekend. We weren't camping but did go over to James Island to show some friends the campground. I was surprised at the number of trees on the access round to the park that they are allowing to grow over the road on each side making a canopy of very low branches. If you have a fifth wheel or high motor home be very careful getting to the park. We even left using the opposite direction and those road were just as bad. You can even see where the bark on some branches are stripped away from recent scraping. We have been there with our travel trailer and had no issues since it wasn't as high, but now with a fifth wheel we will be thinking twice about going. If you can get there it is a beautiful place!
we went there a few years back. thought the park was great, but as i went in with our Dutch Star...we hit a hanging vine, not even a tree branch, and it shattered the a/c cover and bent one of my air horns so badly, needed to replace it....have never been back...just too costly of an rv park for me...Chuck - Retired_JSOExplorer

Planning a trip to Charleston, can be a wonderful outing but planning far in advance would be prudent. Reservations are a must at James Island which, in warm weather months, can stay booked. Our son is being transfered to North Charleston in the future so we intend to look for additional camping spots other than James Island where the need to have a long range reservation is unnecessary. - VE3ESNExplorer

- Jim_ShoeExplorerI recommend the Mt. Pleasant KOA.
Its about 7 miles east of the bridge into downtown Charleston on Hwy 17. FHUs, cable and WIFI, a beautiful setting next to a lake, and far enough off of 17 to cancel the noise of a busy road. I've stayed there 3 times. Patriot's Point is on the same side of the bridge. You can visit and tour the USS Yorktown, a WWII aircraft carrier. Several of the planes that flew from her are on the flight deck.
