There are many opinions about the train/bus combinations Durango to Silveton. I think that the best combination is to take the train up in the morning when you and your family are fresh. I think these are the best views--Durango to Silverton. Then take the bus back for a more relaxing ride in the afternoon.
We have made the trip several times--both ways on the train and the combination above.
Once we got off the train at Needle Creek to begin a backpack into the Wemenuche Wilderness. I guess that was the best way to "get back" of all.
